It was a busy weekend for USF athletics with many teams taking the field, let's recap everything in one post to get everyone caught up.
The baseball team swept Savannah State, racking up 34 runs in two days (double header on Saturday) as the team improves to 7-4 now with Jacksonville coming to town on Tuesday. Daniel Rockhold had 2 home runs, Alex Mendez had a grand slam, and the pitching staff, led by Andrew Barbosa and Derrick Stultz, all had big performances to get the team back on the winning track.
The softball team split both double headers, ending the weekend with a 13-4 record. The Bulls had strong performances from Sam Greiner, Sara Nevins, Gina Kafalas, and Kourtney Salvarola. The Bulls could have swept Sunday, but were forced to head to extra innings after a pitchers' duel cooled off their bats. The ladies return home Wednesday night to face Central Michigan for a double header.
The women's basketball team lost in the second round to DePaul on Saturday, 62 to 76. The ladies end the year at 17-15 (9-9) and will most likely be headed to the NIT (Selection Sunday is coming soon). The ladies, with only 3 Big East wins last year, had a huge season and thanks to the sharp shooting of Wynne and Orekhova should keep it going in the postseason.
The big story line was the men's basketball team losing the final game of the regular season 44 to 51 to WVU on senior night. The loss sends the Bulls to 19-12 (12-6) and back on the bubble as they head to New York for the Big East tournament. A win would have been another resume builder, but with the defeat, the Bulls have to win at least one more game to improve their chances of making the dance. The Bulls battled hard, but Kevin Jones and WVU made the key shots down the stretch in the defensive struggle at the Forum. The Bulls will continue to play and will face the winner of the Rutgers/Villanova game on Wednesday night at 9:30PM.
