The USF Bulls, 14-8 on the season, begin the Big East portion of their schedule as the Georgetown Hoyas come to Tampa for a 3-game series over the weekend.
Georgetown is 11-10 on the year, playing their first Big East games of the season as well as both sides look to get off to a strong start in league play (game tonight is scheduled for 7PM).
The Hoyas are led by junior outfielder Justin Leeson (6-3 200-pounds) who is batting .387 with 1 home run and has 12 RBIs on the season. Junior infielder Mike Garza (6-1 195-pounds) is batting .387 with 2 home runs and has 19 RBIs on the season. Senior catcher Kevin Johnson (5-11 190-pounds) is batting .338 with 3 home runs and 17 RBIs entering the weekend. Sophomore 1B Steve Anderson (6-5 240-pounds) is batting .373 with 2 home runs, 7 doubles, and has 8 RBIs (watch out for his bat this series). Senior outfielder Rand Ravnaas (6-2 205-pounds) is batting .337 with 2 home runs, 19 RBIs, and has 7 steals on the year to round out a talented batting order that is deep and will challenge the USF pitching staff that has been strong as of late.
Geogetown also brings a talented pitching staff to Tampa that will challenge the USF hitters. Freshman RHP Will Brown (6-5 200-pounds) is 1-1 on the year while working 27.1 innings, allowing 36 hits, 5 walks, and has struck out 11 batters. Junior RHP Neal Demison (6-0 175-pounds) is 2-0 while working 18 innings, allowing 21 hits, 6 walks, and has 13 strike outs. Junior RHP James Heine (6-1 200-pounds) has one save in 14.2 innings of work, allowing 20 hits, 7 walks, and has 11 strike outs. They tend to give up a few extra hits during games, which goes well for the USF offense that relies on loading the bases and moving runners.
This is a big opening series for both clubs as they try to get off to a strong start in Big East play in the opening weekend. The two sides will play again on Saturday at 6PM and again on Sunday at 1PM.
