The Bulls host Illinois State in a mid-week game that puts two teams that are playing well and both looking for key wins early in the year. USF is 11-6 while Illinois State is 10-4 on the year, coming off of a loss to Miami just the night before (game starts at 7PM).
Illinois State is led by junior infielder Kyle Stanton (6-2 220-pounds) who is hitting .371 with 1 home run and has driven in 21 runs already. Junior infielder Brett Kay (5-11 165-pounds) is batting .389 with 1 home run, 5 RBIs, and has 8 steals on the year in 9 attempts, so the Bulls will have to watch for him to create on the bases. Senior catcher Matt Mirabal (5-11 190-pounds) is batting .396 with 2 home runs and has driven in 11 runs. Senior outfielder Ty Wiesemeyer (5-11 190-pounds) leads the team batting .407 with 1 home run and has 9 RBIs on the year to round out a deep and talented hitting order. The pitching staff is anchored by freshman LHP Dylan Craig (6-1 205-pounds) who is 2-0 on the year while working 18.1 innings, allowing 18 hits, 5 walks, and has struck out 15 batters. Senior LHP Kenny Long has 3 saves on the year while striking out 11 batters in his limited appearances.
The Bulls are coming off of a solid win against Yale on Monday and are looking to continue their trend of strong pitching and that timely hitting that has gotten them by so far. Illinois State is a strong team, especially with their great hitters, so the Bulls will need to be at their best in this one to win the game in order to continue their strong home play and notch another win as they prepare for the Big East play down the road.
