Reviewing the 2011-2012 USF WBB Roster

The USF ladies finished the year at 19-16 (8-8) on the year, ending the year in the 3rd round of the WNIT tournament.  It was the 8th time in the last 9 years the Bulls have made it to a postseason tournament.  WHile the overall record was great, it was the individual effort from each player that made it happen this season.  Let's take a look at the personal accomplishments of each player.

Sasha Bernard - 5-6 - Junior - Guard - Delray Beach, Florida

Bernard played in 29 games for the Bulls, starting 9 of them. She finished the year averaging 4.1 points per game (120 total), 2 rebounds per game (57 total), had 41 steals, 2 blocks, and dished out 55 assists while shooting 41% from the floor.  She was a great role player for the Bulls, providing strong minutes off the bench.  She tore her ACL in the Big East tournament, which may limit her at the start of next season, but we hope she recovers quickly due to her skill set and what she can bring to the court for Fernandez and company.

Daleisha Carn - 6-0 - Redshirt Senior - Forward - Jacksonville, Florida

Carn appeared in 7 games for the Bulls, totaling 18 points in those game (2.6 per game), had 15 total rebounds (2.1 per game), 2 steals, and 2 assists.  She will return next year and give Fernandez another solid post player that can come in off the bench.

Tiffany Conner - 5-9 - Junior - Forward - Teaneck, New Jersey

Conner played in all 35 games for the Bulls, starting 15 of them. She averaged 4.5 points per game (156 total points), 5.9 rebounds per game (207 total), had 71 steals, 10 blocks, and 69 assists.  She was not a big time scorer compared to Orekhova or Wynne, but she was one of the most aggressive players in the paint for the Bulls, fighting for rebounds and getting after people on defense.  She will be a key factor next year for the Bulls as they look to make it back to the NCAA tournament.

Emily Dutton - 5-5 - Sophomore - Guard - Niceville, Florida

The walk-on did not play an any game this season for Coach Fernandez.

Aleshia Flowers - 6-1 - Junior - Forward - Converse, Texas

Flowers appeared in 25 games this season, but played sparingly. She totaled just 25 points (1 per game), 1.1 rebounds per game (28 total), had 1 assist, and recorded 9 steals.  She is a very athletic forward that has the size to battle in the paint. She will be a key reserve for Coach Fernandez next season.

Tahira Johnson - 6-1 - Sophomore - Forward - Cambria Heights, New York

Johnson played in 33 games last season, starting 15 of them. She averaged 3.3 points per game (108 total), 3.3 rebounds per game (109 total), had 19 steals, 12 blocks, 11 assists and shot 40% from the floor.  Johnson is another athletic wing player that can play in the point or knock down perimeter shots, stretching the floor for the Bulls.  With another year of experience under her belt, her production should increase next season.

Akila McDonald - 6-4 - Sophomore - Center - Decatur, Georgia

McDonald played in 31 games last season, starting 13 of them and gave the Bulls a big rebounding force inside the paint.  She averaged 4 points per game (123 total), 3.5 rebounds per game (107 total), had 36 blocks, 10 steals, 5 assists and shot 52% from the floor. McDonald is a solid post player that continues to get better on the defensive boards and will play a key role in the paint next season.

Inga Orekhova - 6-2 - Sophomore - Guard - Sevastapol, Ukraine

Orekhova, the sharp shooting JUCO transfer, had to sit the first 15 games of the NCAA due to transfer rules, but she took off after that.  She averaged 13 points per game (started all 20 games after sitting out),   averaging 2.4 rebounds per game, had 20 assists, 20 blocks, and added 31 steals.  She made 55 of 180 3-point attempts during the year, including her first career shot as a Bull.  There is some speculation she may leave to play over in Europe, but we hope she returns and joins with Andrea Smith next season to make up one of the most prolific offensive backcourts in the nation.

Caitlin Rowe - 6-4 - Junior - Center - Canberra Australia

Rowe came to USF from the JUCO level, adding scoring and rebounding in the paint.  She started 26 games, averaging 5.7 points per game (201 total points), 4.1 rebounds per game (145 total), had 21 steals, 36 blocks, and added 18 assists.  Rowe, who was teammates with the Smith sisters in the JUCO level, got better as the season went on and at 6-4, she gives the Bulls a big time presence in the paint that will help them get to the next level in 2012-2013.

Kaneisha Saunders - 5-7 - Junior - Guard - Delray Beach, Florida

Saunders played in all 35 games for USF, starting 17 of them. She averaged 9 points per game (316 total points), 2.3 rebounds per game (81 total), had 37 steals, 5 blocks, and dished out 91 assists during the season while shooting 37% from the floor. Saunders is a very versatile player for Fernandez that can work on the perimeter or run the point when needed.  She can start or come off the bench, providing scoring and tough defense, no matter who she faces.

Andrea Smith - 5-8 - Senior - Guard - Lakeland, Florida

Smith, the team's leading scorer from a year ago, never stepped on the court as she continued her rehab from a torn ACL she suffered in last year's Big East tournament.  There was hope she could play at some point, but the staff decided it was best not to rush her and received a medical redshirt for her, giving her another season to play in 2012.  The Bulls will benefit from her return and the type of offensive firepower she brings to the court.

Andrell Smith - 5-8 - Junior - Guard - Lakeland, Florida

The younger sister of Andrea, Andrell started 18 games this season for USF.  She averaged 8.3 points per game (292 total points), 4.3 rebounds per game (150 total), had 38 steals, 3 blocks, and 44 assists, helping add scoring when Jasmine Wynne went down with a concussion in the season.  Andrell is a tough player, showing she is not afraid to battle for rebounds and does all the little things while on the court.  She will have a chance to play with her sister in her final season in 2012.

Shalethia Stringfield - 5-6 - Freshman - Guard - Jacksonville, Florida

The only freshman on the roster, Stringfield started 11 games this season.  She finished the year averaging 3.4 points per game (115 total), 1.5 rebounds (51 total), had 19 steals, 4 blocks 32 assists, and shot 34% from the floor. Stringfield started most of the games to begin the year, but when Orekhova, she had her minutes reduced, but still provided great scoring off the bench.  She is one of the younger players on the team that will continue to lead the program for years to come.

Jasmine Wynne - 5-7 - Senior - Guard - Jacksonville, Florida

Wynne took over the team his season, putting them on her back and leading them to the WNIT.  She averaged 15.4 points per game (492 total), 5.3 rebounds per game (176 total), had 81 steals, 10 blocks, 77 assists, shot 42% from the floor, and was 121 out of 178 attempts at the free throw line, leading the team. Wynne was everything for the USF Bulls, shooting the lights out and being named 2nd team all Big East and most improved player in the league.  The team will miss her next season, but will never forget the year she had for them in 2011.
