USF Baseball Takes on Stetson

Todd Brazeal and company look to notch another win before hitting the road over the weekend.
The USF Bulls, 20-9 (5-1), are coming off of a strong weekend, taking two of three against Notre Dame.  They will now take a break from conference action as Stetson comes to town.  The Hatters are 18-9 (3-3) on the year, including 4-5 on the road.  The Bulls will be looking to close out their home stand with a strong win, but the Hatters will pose a real challenge.

The Hatters are led by junior catcher/infielder Sam Kimmel (6-0 180-pounds) who is batting .307 with 1 home run and 14 RBIs.  Senior infielder Ben Carhart (5-11 180-pounds) is batting .324 with with 1 home run, 19 RBIs, and has 5 doubles on the season.  Junior 1B/outfielder Mitchel Brennan (6-1 175-pounds) is batting .288 with 2 home runs and has 8 RBIs.  Senior outfielder Spencer Theisen (5-11 175-pounds) is batting .284 with 1 home run, 14 RBIs, and has 6 steals on the season.  The Hatters, like the Bulls, like to get base runners on and manufacture runs.  USF pitchers will have to get outs early in innings before Stetson can load up the bases and starting moving base runners.

The Hatter pitching staff is led by senior RHP Lindsey Caughel (6-3 195-pounds) who is 4-1 on the year (3.76 ERA) while throwing 40.2 innings, allowing 56 hits, 4 walks, and has struck out 42 batters.  Senior RHP Will Dorsey (5-11 190-pounds) is 3-2 (3.26 ERA) while throwing 38.2 innings, allowing 52 hits, 6 walks, and has struck out 29 batters. Senior RHP Robbie Powell (6-0 180-pounds) is 1-0 (.53 ERA) with 7 saves on the year.  He has worked 17 innings, allowing just 7 hits, 5 walks, and has struck out 14 batters.  Sophomore LHP Cameron Griffin (6-1 185-pounds) is 1-0 while working 14.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, 8 walks, and has struck out 23 batters in relief.  The Hatters don't walk a lot batters and pound the strike zone. The starters, like Caughel, will give up some hits, but work their way out of trouble and for late inning situations, arms like Powell shut the door, making late game heroics tough.

USF really needs to win this game.  Winning it would help give them some momentum as they hit the road after spending the entire month of March in Tampa.  They will face Cincinnati on the road starting Friday for a 3-game series.
