We assume this was Holtz's reaction when he heard the game vs. Rutgers had been scheduled for Thursday night. |
It was expected and dreaded and now it is a reality. USF's Big East opener against Rutgers on
Thursday September 13 has been scheduled for 7:30PM on ESPN.
The time and date for that game had been TBA, but many
speculated it would be moved to the Thursday night slot to accommodate the ESPN
television scheduled.
This is going to be the first time the Bulls will open up
the Big East schedule in September since 2007, but it will be a short week for
the team. USF travels to face Nevada
the week before, forcing them to deal with the time change and giving them only
5 days to prepare for Rutgers, a strong conference opponent.
The scheduling of the Rutgers game is not very popular,
especially among the fans and even with Coach Holtz when he spoke to Andrea
Adelson of ESPN : "I don’t like it, but I don’t have a veto vote,"
Holtz said. "I would have not agreed to play at Nevada the second week in
the year had I known we were playing Rutgers the third game. But that’s how it
came out. It will be a great challenge. I know our players will be excited
about Rutgers." (Quote from the ESPN Big East Blog)
As Holtz mentions, he does not like it, but the Bulls were
short of options when they were forced to schedule another non-conference
opponent during the conference shifting and had no real idea how the Big East
schedule would come together. Holtz is
taking in stride and will face the challenge head on, but it is definitely not
the best news to hear about the timing.
