Friday Night One of the Biggest Nights in USF Athletic History?

Since I came to USF back in 2005, there have been several shinning moments for all of the athletic programs.  From the men's basketball team upsetting Georgetown and other highly ranked opponents at the old Sun Dome, watching the women's basketball team make it to the NCAA tournament and win a WNIT tournament, to the tennis teams claiming Big East titles, all have been huge, but are they as big as the game this Friday night?

The USF softball team is taking the field this Friday night in a best of 3-game series against Hofstra in the Super Regionals of the NCAA tournament.  The winner will head to the College World Series and a shot at winning the national title.  These games will be on national television and the team is making all the headlines these days. Yet the question remains, is this the biggest on-campus event in USF history?

Now the question is asked with the thought of excluding the football team from this discussion.  While they have their own great highlights, they don't play on campus.  We really can't include this yeas' MBB run to the NCAA tournament either since they played down in South Tampa at the Forum.

There have been plenty of great moments on campus.  From the before mentioned teams to the great soccer teams that have taken the field and all other teams, but do their moments stack up the level that the softball team's series means this weekend?

This is a wide open discussion, so please leave your comments on if you think this weekend series it the biggest on campus event in athletic history (looking at the magnitude of the games, etc.) compared to the other teams and their special games over the years.  This should be a fun discussion among fans, so share away!

  1. I have to be honest... on campus soccer should probably get the nod but there is no doubt that hosting is a huge deal for these girls. It's hard to quantify one over the other really. Well done Bulls!

  2. This softball game reflects the efforts of a great many supporters of the game of fastpitch softball. The Tampa Bay area has long been a hot bed of youth softball. Many of our finest athletes have learned the gane and practiced long hours to finally reach this point. There are many fine junior coaches that have spent counless hours trying to teach and have also given freely of their time and care.

It takes a lot of effort by all involved to reach this point. If you ask these players when they first started, your response would probably be "when I was 6 or 7". Lots of time nd effort to reach this game. Good luck Bulls and be very proud of your accomplishments. There will be a lot of "former teammates", and foes both, cheering you on.

    Don't stop now!

  3. That is a great point you make about the area talent and how it's rising now. Coach Eriksen was on 1010 CBS the other day (JP Happy Hour) and talked about how the team is loaded from the bay area unlike other teams that have players from out of state. Eriksen joked about seeing Nevins when she was 13 and at 6" tall and throwing heat left handed, that had his eye right off the bat and we see how it is working out.

Enough credit can't be given to the local coaches and the dedication the players put in every day at practice and the park. They will keep it going and it is great to see USF family with them and supporting them even more.
