Bull Bits: Claire Lessinger Steps Down and Other Notes

Thank you coach for everything and we wish you the best.

There has been a lot going on with USF athletics within the past few days, time to catch up on the latest. Word came out last night that volleyball head coach Claire Lessinger will be resigning as the head coach as of July 15 due to an illness in her family (mother recently diagnosed with cancer).  Coach Lessinger who has been with the program for 13 years, spending the last 8 as the head coach, led the Bulls to a record of 101-127 (44-40) over the past 8 years, taking the team to the Big East tournament 4 out of the past 5 years (finished 3rd in 2007 and 2009).   We wish Coach Lessinger and her family the best and thank her for everything she has done for the program.

The Bulls will now begin a nationwide search for the next head coach, but could hand the program over to Nikki Shade, Lessinger's top assistant coach since 2004 (per Greg Auman).  USF is also searching for a new men's tennis coach after Coach Don Barr retired after 20 years with the program.

The Bulls also made an announcement the other day that they will be facing UCF to open the brand new Sun Dome this season on November 10th.  The in-state rivals will make it a home-and-home series, meaning the two teams will face off twice in 2013 when the Knights join the Big East.  The Bulls will host Georgia on November 30th as part of the SEC vs. Big East challenge and will travel to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State on December 5th as they begin a home-and-home series.  This is a solid scheduling for the Bulls as they look to continue to rise as a basketball program.
