Who is Ball State?

Let's try not to lose this game please.
The Bulls, on the road again, as they head to Muncie, Indiana to take on Ball State, a member of the MAC conference and foe they beat last year in Tampa.  Ball State, 2-1 (1-0) on the season so far is fresh off of a road win at Indiana and will be looking for a little revenge after last season in Tampa.  Let's learn a little bit more about this week's foe.

Last season, the Bulls beat Ball State in Tampa 37 to 7 as Daniels and company were able to take care of business and beat the Cardinals.  USF rushed for 147 yards and passed for 372 yards while the Bulls defense limited the Cardinals to just 77 yards rushing and 148 yards passing.   B.J. Daniels was 28 for 39 for 359 yards and 1 touchdown (also had 1 interception).  Demetris Murray had 14 carries for 49 yards and a score.  The defense, led by Dede Lattimore and his 7 tackles and 2 tackles for loss and Elkino Watson with 3 tackles for loss, limited starting quarterback Keith Wenning to just 148 yards passing and sacked him 3 times during the game.

Ball State is not a powerhouse by any means, but they do have some talent on both sides of the ball.  On offense, led by quarterback Keith Wenning and running back Jahwan Edwards, they are able to put up points in a hurry and scored 41 on Indiana last week and put up 27 in a losing effort to Clemson (not a bad program right there).  They run an up tempo style of offense, getting to the line quickly and snapping the ball, making it hard to substitute in fresh players on defense.  On the defensive side of the ball for them, they run a base 4-3 set that has depth, but not a lot of speed.  The USF skill players will prove to be a tough fight for them, but the real concern is protecting Daniels and him making the smart reads.  Overall, the Cardinals like to control the ball, play keep away late, and score a lot of their points in the 3rd quarter coming out the break, so there the Bulls cannot have any mental break in this game.

This is a very interesting game to watch.  After the debacle against Rutgers, there were a lot of mistakes and areas of concern for this team and now they are on the road against a team that remembers how we beat them last year and this time we don't have Darrell Scott to jump over anyone.  Their home stadium only holds around 22,000, but that crowd will be loud and the Bulls, maybe looking ahead to FSU the next week, need to be focused and take care of business in this game.
