Skip Holtz completed a very successful 1st year leading the USF Bulls. Coming into the recruiting season late, changing coaches, losing players to the NFL and transferring, and winning over the current players, Holtz had a lot on his plate plus actually coaching the games. [keep reading]
The Bulls went 8-5, including an upset win against Miami and a bowl victory over Clemson. The Bulls had normally fallen apart late in the season under Leavitt, but after losing 3 games, the Bulls rallied and won 3 in a row (5-2 down the stretch of the season), including a big win at Cincinnati that kept the Big East title dreams alive (stupid UCONN and Pitt).
Holtz changed the entire feeling with the team and also around the university. The team was a bit more relaxed (more of a family feeling among the players and staff), Holtz was more open to the media, and the team came together supporting each other. During Fall, Holtz took the team to Vero Beach (Dodger town) and changed the entire fall practice drills, even having defensive players room with offensive, making sure the team was one big family, it paid off big this season. When the team was getting down after a loss, it seems they rallied for each other, unlike in previous years.
8-5. Many believed the Bulls would finish at 8-5 or 7-6 after the bowl game, so the Bulls did what the experts thought they would, but there is much more to those 8 wins than any number will show. This team showed that even with a depleted roster and numerous changes all over the program, Holtz led them to victory. Now as he has his 1st season under his belt, he can begin the real work, building the program for the future. He is now recruiting his type of players and adding more depth and playmakers to the roster. If Holtz continues this winning trend and
