Crater Turning It Around?

The USF basketball season is beginning to turn South for the men. 6 straight defeats and now a road trip to one-loss Cincinnati, the team could be at the bottom of the conference again. One player that took a lot of heat early and is seemingly turning it around lately is guard Anthony Crater.[keep reading]

Crater, the former Ohio State transfer, came into the season as the starting point guard, filling in for Chris Howard. Crater had played sparingly last season, backing up Howard and Jones, usually coming in for defense and speed. But this season gave him the chance to start and it wasn't pretty early.

Crater played poorly early in the season, giving up turnovers, shooting poorly from the field, and just simply not running the offense. Many fans, including myself, were calling for a change at the position, but with a limited bench, Coach Heath had no choice but to stick with Crater for the future and since that decision, Crater seems to be responding.

Crater in the last few games has been able to move the offense, getting more assists and limiting the turnovers. Last game against Louisville he had 10 assists against a fast, pressure oriented Cardinal, not a bad performance. Crater is a very fast player and has to rely on defense and his playmaking ability. He is not a good shooter, so fans and Heath have to understand he will not pull up and score 30 a night, instead he will look to create for teammates and move the ball around.

The rest of the season is going to be rough for the Bulls, but seeing players play hard and turn their season around is a positive and Crater is doing that. He is not the most impressive player, but solid and getting better. For a season that may be lost, he seems to be doing better than many give him credit for.
