While Daniels struggled to pass the ball and Eveld got knocked out (may have a broken jaw after the hit he took), the passing game was simply awful. But freshman Matt Floyd raised some eyebrows with his performance on Saturday and gave the fans and coaches a glimpse of a promising future.[keep reading]
The 18-year old freshman quarterback graduated early in December and joined the team this Spring to get adjusted to college life and to get to work on the football field. While most kids his age are going to Prom, worrying about applying to college, Floyd is already enrolled, taking classes, and working hard every day at practice. The fact that a young man is so dedicated to his team and his future as a quarterback is simply amazing. He is a very focused player and getting an early start like this in his career is huge.
The 6'2" 190-pound signal caller out of Milton, Florida, was only a 3-star recruit (according to Rivals.com) and not heavily recruited by some of the bigger programs around the state, but he is already showing how much potential he has.
Floyd completed 20 of 34 passes in the Spring game for 233 yards, including 1 touchdown (a 70-yard bomb to Hopkins) and 1 interception. Floyd showed great poise in the pocket, delivered accurate passes, and showcased some arm strength. The coaches were impressed with his performance and Floyd was happy with his work, but knows he can do even better.
With the injury to Eveld and Gunsby's departure for the Spring, the door is wide open for Floyd. Floyd was been working hard every day in practice and now with more opportunity for him, he may have an outside chance at becoming the backup quarterback for the season begins (Eveld probably is still the backup despite his bad performance and injury).
Floyd will most likely redshirt this season, which may not be a bad thing. He is still young and while he had a lot of fans cheering at the Spring game, it was only the Spring game, and not the type of defenses he will be seeing in the future. Floyd could be the future star for USF, but for now, should take his time, learn the position, sit for a year, and save his eligibility (won't play much with Daniels calling the shots).
