Freshmen Receivers Shining

The Bulls suffered their third straight loss on Saturday, but one highlight from the game was the emergence of the freshmen receivers, Deonte Welch and Andre Davis.  While Sterling Griffin continues to lead the team in receptions and other veterans like A.J. Love get the majority of the playing time, the freshmen stepped up and gave a glimpse of their potential and the bright future ahead of them.

Deonte Welch had a coming out party on Saturday.  He had 5 receptions for 130 yards, giving him 11 catches for 213 yards on the season.  Welch made big plays, getting short routes and turning the ball up field for big chunks of yardage.  Throughout camp, players and coaches continued to say how good Welch is and now we get to see what they are talking about.  If he can continue to produce like this, he will see more passes thrown his way.

Andre Davis had 4 receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown on the afternoon as well.  He has 8 receptions for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns on the year, making big strides as a true freshman.  Davis has been impressive in his limited playing time  as well and shows his skills with amazing catches.  He will continue to get on the field and will become a quarterbacks best friend with his ability to catch anything.

Despite the loss, there were a few bright spots.  Seeing the freshmen step up and make big plays should have fans excited.  The youth of the team will learn from this and get better in the coming games and down the road.
