Scouting Cincinnati: Defense

Time to take a look at the Cincinnati defense. The Bulls have faced the 3-4 defense, 4-3 defense, but this time around, they face a different defensive scheme, the nickel package. The Bearcats typically only use 2 linebackers and substitute another defensive back in the secondary to either play in coverage or to help create new blitz schemes. Let's see the personnel Cincinnati brings to this game.

Defensive Line

The Bearcats run a tradition 4-man front. Starting at defensive end is junior Walter Stewart (6-5 248-pounds). He has 18 tackles on the season including 4 tackles for loss and one sack His back-up is junior Brandon Mills (5-11 251-pounds). He has 10 tackles on the year, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks (have to watch for him on speed rushes). Junior Dan Giordano (6-4 261-pounds) is the other starting end. He has 13 tackles on the season, but 5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks, bringing heat on opposing quarterbacks all the time. Junior Rob Trigg (6-3 265-pounds) is his back-up. He has 2 tackles on the season, including a half tackle sack for loss.

Senior Derek Wolfe (6-5 300-pounds) is the starter at defensive tackle. He has 30 tackles on the season including 10 tackles for loss and 5 sacks, stopping both running backs and quarterbacks. Freshman Camaron Beard (6-5 278-pounds) is his back-up. He has 4 tackles. Senior John Hughes (6-4 300-pounds) is the other starter at defensive tackle. He has 19 tackles this season including 3.5 tackles for a loss and 1 sack. Sophomore Jordan Stepp (6-1 287-pounds) is his back-up. He has 14 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss and a half sack.

Once again, the Bulls are facing a solid defensive line. The Bearcats have size at all 4 spots, including the big bodies in the center of the line. The pass rushers have a lot of length as well, making it a tough job for the USF tackles.

Linebackers

Senior J.K. Schaffer (6-1 227-pounds) is one of the two starting linebackers. He has 46 tackles on the season (leads the team) including 6 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 3 interceptions. He is all over the field, stopping the pass and the run. Freshman Dwight Jackson (6-1 213-pounds) is his back-up. He has 6 tackles including one for loss. Junior Maalik Bomar (6-2 220-pounds) is the other starting linebacker. He has 23 tackles including a half sack. Freshman Clemente Casscus (6-1 205-pounds) is his back-up. He has 8 tackles including 2 tackles for loss.

Using two linebackers is a unique set-up for the Bearcats defense, something USF has not seen this season. Jones can use these two spots however he wants, from loading up the box, blitzing, or dropping them back in coverage. It will be interesting to see how aggressive the playcalling will be in this game.

Secondary

Junior Cameron Cheatham (5-9 195-pounds) is one of the three starting corners. He has 31 tackles on the season, including one interception. Sophomore Adrian Witty (5-10 177-pounds) is his back-up. He has 8 tackles. Senior Dominique Battle (6-0 185-pounds) is another starting cornerback. He has 23 tackles on the season including 3.5 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions. Sophomore Deven Drane (5-11 179-pounds) is his back-up. He has 7 tackles including 1 tackle for loss and two interceptions (key player to watch in a reserve role). Junior Chris Williams (5-11 180-pounds) is the last starting cornerback. He has 24 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and one sack. Junior Reuben Johnson (5-10 180-pounds) is his back-up. He has 5 tackles and a half tackle for loss.

Senior Wesley Richardon (6-0 202-pounds) is one of the starting safeties. He has 29 tackles on the season Junior Patrick Lambert (6-1 208-pounds) is his back-up. He has 11 tackles so far. Junior Drew Fry (6-3 200-pounds) is the other starting safety. He has 28 tackles on the season and one interception. Sophomore Arryn Chenault (6-0 197-pounds) is his back-up. He has 6 tackles so far.

Overall, the secondary is pretty stout for the Bearcats, a tougher opponent that the Huskies secondary they faced last weekend. With an extra cornerback roaming around as well, Daniels will have to be careful where he throws the ball. The corners can bring a lot of different packages, both in run and pass defense. The safeties don't have a lot of explosive plays, but are tackling machines, so anything around them they will hit.
