Inside the Numbers: USF Falls to Rutgers in OT 17 to 20

Another game, another loss. 4 straight losses now for the Bulls, all coming in conference play. The frustration and anger among the fans continues to grow as the team continues to fade away. With October behind us, it was easy to think the team would rally, turn it around, and get that first Big East win, but the football Gods were not with us. It is easy to point fingers at playcalling, at Bonani, at Daniels, but the fact is, the team loss. Here are the numbers from the game.
Daniels was not that effective passing the ball. He was just 14 of 34 for 160 yards, averaging just 4.7 yards per pass play. He had 1 touchdown, one interception and was sacked 3 times on the night. He was the second leading rusher with 15 carries for 64 yards as well. He did enough, but due to playcalling and indecision by Daniels at times, he never took deep shots (had a few, but did not throw the ball well) and kept everything underneath, not getting the ball in space or moving the offense with consistency.

Darrell Scott led the way running the ball for the Bulls. He had 19 carries for 100 yards. Demetris Murray had 14 carries for 37 yards, showing a few solid runs up the middle when Scott was a little banged up to start the game. Lindsey Lamar had 2 carries 28 yards.

Murray was the leading receiver with 2 receptions for 45 yards. Deonte Welch had 4 for 37 yards, Victor Marc, who cost points early in the game, had 3 for 30 yards and a touchdown. Evan Landi had 2 for 16, Andre Davis had 1 for 16, Darrell Scott had 1 for 9 and Andreas Shields had 1 for 7 yards.

The defense came to play in this game, allowing -7 rushing yards for Rutgers and bottling up their offense until late in the game when they switched to Chas Dodd and forgot to cover Mohamed Sanu on the corner. DeDe Lattimore led the way with 11 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, and 3 tackles for loss. Ryne Giddins had 9 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2.5 tackles for loss. Sam Barrington had 9 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss. Kayvon Webster had 2 tackles and one key interception, doing a solid job trying to cover for Sanu for most of the game.

What cost the team was the terrible special teams play. Maikon Bonani, who may have been dealing with a slight groin injury, went 1 for 3 on field goals, missing a 27-yard attempt at the end of regulation. While blame is put on Bonani, the entire team lost the game, not just him. Justin Brockhaus-Kann punted the ball 9 times, but averaged just 32.8 yards per kick, hitting a 15-yard punt earlier, hurting the team in field position for the entire game.

This was an ugly loss, there is blame to go all around and now the team has a short week to prepare for a trip to Syracuse on Friday night (game at 8PM).
