Scouting Louisville: Special Teams

Victor Anderson can be a dangerous return man for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals bring a solid special teams unit into this game. They have several dangerous returners, both in punt and kick returns, so USF has to be ready to cover kicks and keep the battle for field position on their side (JBK may be kicking 10 times in this game).

Senior Chris Philpott (6-0 198-pounds) is the starting place kicker. He is 6 of 13 on the season, hitting a long of 52 yards (no kicks blocked for him so far). He is also the kick-off specialist, kicking off 45 times, averaging 66.6 yards a kick. He has 13 touchbacks on the season, showing a strong leg.

The starting punter is senior Josh Bleser (6-2 213-pounds) who has punted 38 times this season, averaging 38.5 yards a kick and hitting a long of 53 yards. He has landed 15 kicks inside the opponents 20 yard line, so field position will be a key battle. Philpott is the reserve punter. He has punted 25 times, averaging 36.9 yards a kick.

Freshman wide receiver Eli Rogers (5-10 184-pounds) is the top punt return man. He has 8 returns for 54 yards. Scott Radclif (5-10 182-pounds) has 7 for 34 yards. The Bulls do a solid job stopping punt returns, so expect them to shut this part of the game down as well.

The Cardinals have a lot of speed in the kick return game. Running back Jeremy Wright (5-11 199-pounds) has 16 returns for 343 yards (21.4 per return). Senior running back Victor Anderson (5-10 189-pounds) has 6 returns for 152 yards (25.3 yards per return). Sophomore running back Senorise Perry (6-0 201-pounds) has 7 for 156 yards (22.3 yards per return). Junior Adrian Bushnell (5-11 190-pounds) has 4 returns for 173 yards (43 yards a return, come on) and one touchdown on the season. The Cards are dangerous in the return game, so USF has to be careful and make sure they are not able to get huge returns and give their offense a short field to work with.
