USF, along with the rest of the Big East, won't be facing Tavon Austin and WVU starting this season. |
News came today that the Big East voted to "terminate" the membership of WVU, effective on June 30th. This move will allow WVU to head to the Big 12 for the start of the 2012-2013 academic season. According to CBS, the Big East will get $20 million from WVU, but will only pay $10 million, the other $10 million being "loaned" to WVU from the Big 12 (isn't that nice of them).
With WVU leaving for the Big 12, it leaves the Big East with just 7 football members. There are talks that the Big East is trying to add Boise State a year early, but if that is not possible, the remaining football teams would be forced to scramble to add an additional game to their respective schedules.
So what does this mean for USF? It means the Bulls will not travel to Morgantown this season (at least in league play for any sport). They will now have to wait and see like the remaining football teams to see what the conference does. If the Big East is able to add Boise State, there is a chance they could take WVU's Big East schedule, which could possibly mean another West Coast trip for the Bulls in 2012 (already traveling to play Nevada this season). For now, USF will have to wait and see what the league does. If they can't Boise for this year, then the scramble for another football opponent will be on.
