Signing Day Wrap-up

The LOIs are finally in and the 2012 recruiting class is here. Each player brings a unique skill set to the Bulls football team. Some players will have a chance early in their careers to make an impact while others will need more time in the weight room or will have to wait behind the older players before they can make the field. Here are the recruits along with a profile about them as well.

Kofi Amichia - 6-4 255-pounds - Offensive lineman - 3-stars - Powder Springs, GA (McEachern HS)

Amichia is a 3-star prospect (according to Rivals) and helps add depth to a need position for the Bulls. He runs the 40-yard dash in 5.15 seconds and has a 28" vertical, showing his athleticism (played basketball most of his life and has a 6-10 wing span). He has solid frame, although he will need to add some weight this season (although Darrell Williams played last year at tackle while weighing 255-pounds). Amichia played right tackle for his high school, but the Bulls may look to move him to guard in his career.

Chris Bivins - 5-11 175-pounds - Cornerback - 3-stars - Gainesville, FL (Gainesville HS)

Bivins, the highly talented cornerback, has already enrolled at USF, allowing him to work out with the team and begin his collegiate career. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds, the shuttle run in 4.16 seconds, and has a 31" vertical, showing his raw speed and ability.

Bivins tore his ACL in his last game of his high school season, but has had successful surgery and has been working with the USF trainers in his rehab process. Holtz stated that Bivins, who should be ready by August for the Fall practices, has a strong chance to play this season due to lack of depth at the corner position.

Joshua Brown - 6-1 190-pounds - Cornerback - 2-stars - Arizona Western C.C.

Josh Brown joins the Bulls after playing last season at Arizona Western Community College (in Yuma, Arizona). Brown is a very athletic player that will help add depth and skill to the USF secondary. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, showing his speed, and could be a big factor this with the lack of proven depth for the Bulls. He has already enrolled at USF, giving him more time to work with the team and coaching staff. He had offers from Utah, Utah State, and New Mexico among others.

Kameron Davis - 6-6 280-pounds - OL - 3 stars - Oakland Park, FL (Northeast HS)

Kameron Davis is a very talented offensive lineman and one of the top prospects still on USF's big board. He had offers from big programs such as WVU, Vanderbilt, and even Texas Tech, so it was tough recruiting battle that USF won. Davis is very athletic and could get playing time this season at the tackle position. He has the size needed and will only get better when he comes to campus and begins working in the weight room.

Guito Ervilus - 6-4 230-pounds - DE - 3-stars - Orlando, FL (Oakridge HS)
The first player to fax in their LOI today was Ervilus today. The talented athlete has played wide receiver, tight end, and defensive line while in high school, but Holtz stated he will play at the defensive end position. Ervilus was recruited by top programs before an injury forced him to miss most of his senior season. He is a very gifted athlete that gives the Bulls depth and speed at the end position. He has a chance to prove himself this offseason if he can get in the weight room and make strides at practice.
James Hamilton - 6-2 300-pounds - DT - 3-stars - Orlando, FL (Olympia HS)
Hamilton, who is already enrolled at USF, made it official today with his LOI. The cousin of current Bull Corian Hamilton, James joins the USF family and could make a huge impact right away for Holtz. He is a very athletic big man that reminds the coaching staff of Terrell McClain. He can stop the run and also get up the field to pressure the quarterback.

Eric Lee - 6-3 220-pounds - DE - 3-stars - Daphne, Alabama (Daphne HS)

Eric Lee joins the Bulls (already enrolled) and helps add depth and skill to the end position. He is a very athletic player that comes from a very disciplined family (father is a former marine). Lee will be a solid player but might redshirt this season due to the depth on the roster. He has the skill set and will become a great player down the road.

Lawrence Martin - 6-3 307-pounds - OL - 3-stars - Merced College

Martin, another college athlete, has already joined the USF team and will make an immediate impact on the team this season. Holtz views him as a Jeremiah Warren type player that can play either at the guard or tackle position. The Bulls needed to add some experienced players on the offensive line to help lead the young players on the line. Martin will have a chance to play a lot this season.

Chandlor Mathews - 6-2 279-pounds - OL - 3-stars - Pearl River C.C.

Another JUCO star, Mathews comes to USF and could fill a huge void in the offensive line for the Bulls. Holtz has stated he could play either at guard or at center, a huge need for USF with Chaz Hine graduating. USF has just redshirt freshman with Thor Jozwiak and Austin Reiter looking at the position, so having an experienced player come in could help anchor the line for the Bulls and help teach the younger players as they prepare for their futures with the program.

Jarvis McCall - 6-2 185-pounds - DB - 3-stars - Seffner, FL (Armwood HS)

McCall, a local talent, comes to USF and will help bring speed and hard tackling to the secondary. He had 84 tackles in his career and 8 interceptions at Armwood, showing his ability to get back in pass coverage and defend the ball. He will most likely be a safety and adds much needed depth to a unit that had very few returning players for this season (also great to see a local star from next door in Seffner decide to stay close to home for his college career).

Trenton Miller - 6-2 205-pounds - QB - Not rated - Palmetto, FL (Palmetto HS)

Miller joins USF as a preferred walk-on (his teammate, center Trai Sanders is also joining the team). Miller, who played at Palmetto HS, has worked at the IMG Madden Academy for the past few seasons, first as a catcher, but now as a quarterback, working with Heisman winner Chris Weinke to refine his game and become a D1 quarterback. He has a solid arm and throws a nice deep pass. With no scholarship quarterback in this recruiting class, having him will help push the other players and will add valuable talent to the scout team as well.

Tevin Mims - 6-3 240-pounds - DE - 3-stars - Navarro JC

Mims, a former 4-star recruit to Texas out of high school, spent the last season at Navarro before coming to USF (he is already enrolled here). He had 19 tackles and 4 sacks in his one season, taking his team to the postseason. Holtz and staff have this young man in high regards and think he could be a valuable talent this year adding a speed rusher off the edge that has more experience than the younger players on the roster. USF has had success with JUCO players at the end position (one is playing in the Super Bowl) so hopefully he can deliver.

D'vario Montgomery - 6-3 210-pounds - WR - 4-stars - Winter Park, FL (Winter Park HS)

Montgomery, one of the most decorated recruits of this class, gives the Bulls a big time down field receiver that could play this season. He recorded 21 touchdowns his last two seasons, showing his skills with not only his speed but with his great hands. Montgomery had a lot of top programs come after him, but he decided that he wanted to stay close to home (great work by the coaching staff) and suit up for the Bulls.

Fidel Montgomery - 6-0 182-pounds - DB - 3-stars - Southwest Mississippi C.C.

Montgomery, rated the number 3 JUCO safety in the 2012 class, adds great experience to the secondary. The Bulls were depleted last year due to injuries and lacked experienced. Having a player like Montgomery who can play both safety and cornerback (also a great return man if needed) will allow the Bulls more depth in the roster.

Alex Mut - 6-3 190-pounds - WR - 3-stars - Port Charlotte, FL (Charlotte HS)

Mut joins the USF roster after taking a greyshirt last season after he tore his ACL. Now that he is healthy, he adds another weapon to the USF passing game. He is a sure handed receiver that had 27 touchdowns in his high school career and with his height, can become a great possession receiver and a redzone threat due to his skill set and size.

Daniel Perry - 6-8 225-pounds - DE - 3-stars - Ft. Lauderdale, FL (University School)

Perry, the very tall and lanky defensive end, gives the Bulls a great pass rusher that has incredible length off the edge. He had 12 sacks his last two seasons and continues to get better. Holtz will need to work with him in the weight room to help fill out his huge frame, but he could become a big time rusher off the edge for the Bulls for years to come.

Michael Pierre - 5-11 200-pounds - RB - 3-stars - Golden West C.C.

Pierre, originally from Winter Garden, Florida before he went out west, joins the USF team and will help fill the void left behind in the backfield with Darrell Scott leaving for the NFL. He is a faster back that brings a lot of athleticism and should be able to make some great cuts and get up field for the running game. USF recruited him late, but it paid off and now the Bulls will have some more depth in the backfield this season.

Sean Price - 6-3 235-pounds - TE - 4-stars - Citra, Florida (North Marion HS)

Price, one of the most regarded recruits in program history, will join the Bulls and could make an immediate impact this season. He is a big time passing catching tight end that can line up at WR and has the size and speed to beat anyone. He finished his high school career with 21 touchdown grabs (school record) and gives the Bulls a big vertical and redzone threat. Price was recruited by LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma and other top programs before he decided to come to Tampa.

Jalen Spencer - 6-0 175-pounds - DB - 3-stars - Pensacola, FL (Pensacola HS)

Spencer, who broke his leg his senior season, will come to USF healthy and brings a tremendous amount of speed to the secondary. He played quarterback and cornerback in high school and will become a corner at USF. Holtz holds the young man in very high regards and will make a huge impact in the near future.

Tashon Whitehurst - 6-2 190-pounds - LB - 3-stars - Gainesville, FL (Gainesville HS)

Whitehurst is another top prospect the Bulls were able to land after a late run in the recruiting process. Whitehurst, former teammate of Chris Bivins, has 3 teams he is considering, USF, Rutgers, and Syracuse, where he originally committed to. He visited USF two weeks ago and enjoyed the visit. The athletic linebacker runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and has a 25" vertical. He is a huge addition to the class as he helps add great depth and talent to a loaded linebacking unit.

LaMarlin Wiggins - 6-2 190-pounds - WR - 3-stars -Plant City, FL (Plant City HS)

Wiggins joins USF as another local star that decided to stay close to home. He is a very athletic receiver that has tremendous ball skill and can make catches that most receivers would not be able to. He will need to make the grades in order to get into USF (still waiting to see how that turns out) but if and when he joins USF, will be a great vertical threat and will help bail out quarterbacks all over the field.
