USF Softball Takes on Michigan

USF, 10-2, moved it's way into the top 25 in the nation, ranking 23rd according to ESPN/USA Today. It's a great accomplishment, but the team has some work to do today as the 12th ranked Wolverines of Michigan come to town for just one game (first pitch scheduled for 5PM). Michigan is 11-3 this season and will be another early test for the ladies to see if they can notch a victory against one of the best teams around.

Michigan is led by sophomore catcher Cailtin Blanchard (5-5) who is hitting .353 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.  Freshman catcher/outfielder Lauren Sweet (5-5) is batting .351 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.  Senior 3rd baseman Amanda Chidester (5-9) is batting .310 with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs to anchor the middle of the batting order.  Sophomore outfielder Nicole Sappingfield (5-9) is batting .301 with 2 RBIs as well.

The Michigan pitching staff is anchored by two freshmen.  Freshman LHP Haylie Wagner (6-0) is 7-0 with a 1.69 ERA.  She has pitched 37.1 innings, allowing 27 hits, 8 walks, and has struck out 31 batters (.200 batting average against her).  RHP Sara Driesenga (6-0) is 3-3 with a 1.83 ERA.  She has pitched 42 innings, allowing 38 hits, 11 walks, and has struck out 16 (.232 batting average against her).

The Bulls have veteran hitters that might have a chance to do some damage to the young pitching staff of Michigan. USF has a real chance to make a statement if they can pull this game out. Being able to play at home will be huge for USF and hopefully they come away with the big win.
