2012 Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

The Spring Preview continues as we take a look at the quarterback position. The Bulls have the benefit of having a senior starter at the helm in B.J. Daniels. Daniels had one of his best seasons last year, setting new marks in passing and cutting down on mistakes. However, there are still great concerns on the depth chart and who will be his back-up this year. Let's take a look at the depth behind Daniels and what to expect from the position this year.

Daniels (6-0 217-pounds) is the starter unless something dramatic happens. His speed and athletic ability make him one of the most versatile quarterbacks in the conference. He should continue to progress in Todd Fitch's offense, but he has been injured in the past and late in the season when it matters the most leaving the Bulls looking for a back-up this spring. Daniels is poised to have a huge season for USF, but the Bulls need a back-up to help add depth and competition of Daniels.

Sophomore Bobby Eveld (6-5 206-pounds) is a big, pocket passer that earned a scholarship last year, although he didn't play well in his limited snaps during the season. He is not very mobile and seemed to struggle with his timing last year, leaving the back-up role open. Freshman Matt Floyd (6-1 198-pounds) wowed the fans during the Spring last year and nearly played last year when Holtz said he would use Floyd's redshirt up just to get him on the field. He kept his redshirt, learned over the season through practices, and could have a break out spring this year and could eventually get the back-up position behind Daniels is he can beat out Eveld.

Also returning this spring is sophomore Baylin Trujillo (6-1 225-pounds).

This spring, watch the battle between Eveld and Floyd. While the spring depth chart is not the final one, it does set up who the person is to beat in the fall. If Floyd can shine again like he did last year, he could be right behind Daniels.

  1. Floyd may end up being better than Daniels, but will have to wait one more year before doing anything about it. Go Bulls !!!
