Offense Shines in First Spring Scrimmage

The offense shined in the second scrimmage of the spring (Picture: www.gousfbulls.com)
The Bulls took the field last night in a key scrimmage game on campus in front of the home crowd at Corbett Stadium as the team continues to work hard in preparation for the highly anticipated 2012 season (stats and notes from Greg Auman).

The offense was on display in this game, out shinning the defense and frustrating them throughout the night.  The defense had its moments.  Ryne Giddins had 3 sacks on the day (most of them called by the whistle as the first team couldn't hit Daniels).  But despite the solid pass rush and the interception by Kayvon Webster, the offense was able to pass for 550 yards total and scored 10 touchdowns overall, showing the progression the offense has made and how much more work the defense will need to put together in order to become a stronger unit this season.

B.J. Daniels was 18 of 26 for 224 yards, hitting Andre Davis for several big plays.  The back-up quarterbacks were also solid in the game as well.  Bobby Eveld was 12 for 16 for 157 yards and had 3 touchdowns.  Matt Floyd was 17 for 30 for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 INT) as both put on great performances.  Neither one separated themselves during the scrimmage as Coach Holtz stated and the back-up position battle will continue in the fall.

There were a few others notes to take away from the strong scrimmage.  The defense had 12 total penalties on the night (had a Big East crew officiating the game) which angered Holtz to see.  He noted that Michael McFarland is playing well and getting better.  He was also pleased with the effort of Lindsey Lamar and Marcus Shaw out of the backfield as well.  The team will play its last scrimmage on Saturday evening at Raymond James Stadium as they put on the helmets for the last time before the summer comes.

One more note to take from the game.  Junior defensive end, Anthony Hill (6-4 282-pounds) tore his ACL during the scrimmage and could be out this season, which is bad news for a position that is a little thin at the moment.  Hill had 8 total tackles last season including 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 2 pass break ups.  We wish him a speedy recovery.
