Scouting Ball State: Special Teams

Facing a team on the road, special teams will be very important.  Field position will be everything in this game.  Let's see what the Bulls are facing against Ball State and their specialists.

At the punter position is senior Scott Kovanda (6-3 205-pounds).  He has punted 15 times this season, averaging 42.9 yards per punt and has dropped 11 of them inside the opponents 20-yard line.  He is a skilled kicker that has the experience and ability to pin USF deep.

The place kicker is senior Steven Schott (6-0 172-pounds) who is 7 of 8 in field goals this season and a perfect 12 for 12 in extra point attempts.  In a close scoring game, it could come down to the range of his leg and if the Bulls who blocked a kick against Rutgers can get pressure and cause something to happen.

The primary kick returner/punt returner for the Cardinals is senior wide receiver Jamill Smith (5-8 140-pounds).  He has returned 9 kicks this season for 218 yards and has returned 4 punts for 27 yards.  Marvin Kloss after booming kicks into the first row last week will need to keep the ball away from him. JBK, who has been placing the ball well will need to angle kicks and now allow the speedy Smith to get a chance to hurt the Bulls with his speed and change field possession.
